Jane Jackson

Music, 11+, Primary, and Science Tutor

About Me

Hello, I'm Jane.
I offer private tuition in flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, piano, theory of music, 11+, primary, Science (up to and including GCSE), and A-Level Biology.

My love of music started when I was seven years old and I found my dad’s descant recorder at the back of his wardrobe. I spent the afternoon on my bed learning to read music and playing various notes. I was immediately hooked and loved the sound and feel of the instrument.

My parents found a music tutor and paid for me to have private lessons and I was immensely grateful for this. It led to a lifelong love and appreciation of music.

I was a student at St Augustine’s in Billington and spent a lot of time in the music department. With the school I played at a number of venues across the UK as well as at Pebble Mill Studios in Birmingham.

Music was already a major part of my life and at 18 I moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music. Since then I have played at various venues and taught in many schools around the country both primary and secondary.

I have always thoroughly enjoyed sharing my passion for music with others and love teaching other people. Playing a musical instrument has so many benefits, research has found that it improves reading and writing skills, enhances mathematical skills and gives us better listening skills. It even slows down the effects of aging and improves our short-term memory. Several studies have also found that music has the ability to enhance self confidence and self-esteem, especially in children.

My love for teaching does extend beyond music. Before becoming self-employed I spent ten years working as a college lecturer and then becoming head of Science. The experience that I have gained has enabled me to be well equipped to work with different personalities, ages and abilities. I offer private tuition in flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, piano, theory of music, 11+ and primary, Science (up to and including GCSE) and A level Biology. It is important to me that lessons are educational but also fun and enjoyable. I want my students to feel relaxed and comfortable so they can ask any questions throughout the lesson.

I live in Barnoldswick with my husband Simon. I have two grown up children, Jenny and Claire, and two grandchildren, Isabelle and Freddie. When I’m not teaching or spending time with family I enjoy walking in the countryside, cooking, travelling and visiting National Trust gardens.
